About Us

Peaceable Kingdom Retreat began in 1984 as a day camp-like fishing program created in memory of Charles “Baby Charlie” Schreiner V. Founded by Jim and Daurice Bowmer, the program was designed to give children with chronic illnesses and disabilities the opportunity to experience the outdoors in a safe and supportive setting.

What started as “Baby Charlie’s Fishing Camp” quickly grew into a year-round retreat, expanding to include overnight programs and a wide range of inclusive activities focused on independence, connection, and personal growth. Over the years, Peaceable Kingdom became a trusted resource for families across Central Texas, serving thousands of children and caregivers.

Today, Peaceable Kingdom Retreat of Bell County continues this legacy—building on a strong foundation of compassion, inclusion, and community while creating meaningful outdoor experiences for individuals of all abilities.
